View Full Version : cove stripe
I am painting the freeboard on my Commanger 212. I want to add a cove strip similar to that shown in the gallery on the Italian Commanger or hull 376. Did Pearson ever incorporate a specific style for these strips on any of their boats. I have noticed that some manufacturers use a certain style on all of their boats. You can tell who the manufacturer is just by looking at the bow.
You might determine how much thickness you have on 212 up near the sheer (by drilling some small test holes that are easy to plug with epoxy paste?) BEFOR you take a router to the hull.
You might be able to find coving bits that are flatter, or have one reground for a flatter profile. I don't think the coving would have to be very deep to acheive the look you want, Especially if you are going to gold leaf it!
Maybe just thru the gell coat would be enough, without messing too much with the integrity of the hull.
Islanders have that recognizable arrowhead at the bow disconnected from the cove. A distinctive Commander stripe might begin with a star and end with two or three dashes. Or just have three stop coves at the beginning of the stripe near the bow?
I guess the Ariels would have to be satisfied with a plain one.

That Itlian commander does look very sharp and I think the cove stripe adds alot to the look. Our Ariel had a cove stripe on it when we picked her up. I just tried to find a pic to post of it but its gone-the pic and the stripe. It was a simple 1" stripe that reflected the black boot top. It started about two feet back from the bow and ran to about one foot from the stern. The ends were angled to match the sheer of the bow and the counter of the stern. It was tucked right up to the stainless rub rail. I think dropping it down a couple of inches makes for a better appearance.
You could scan all the Pearsons on www.geocities.com/sailapearson/ to see if a particular design was used but I don't recall seeing one. There are some that have a cove moulded or cut into the hull like Ebb has suggested. If you go that route you have major cajones compared to me!! As far as designs go I say use anything that strikes your fancy. So what if some other company has used a certain design-it's YOUR boat. If someone criticizes you for the design you choose they're really missing the point. Paint away! Tony G

1" cove seems hugely wide to me. An off the shelf tray bottoming bit - flat bottom/curved side - could be useful. But I don't think a cove should be wider than 1/2" or so.
C'pete may just have the solution. You paint the topsides and add a tasty strip. How would I do the cove...?....cheat and screw on a temporary batten to rest the router against. Pull it down the portside first from the bow, then do the starboard side from the stern to the bow. Then remove batten and repair the bloody holes. This, befor you put any color on. As Tony sez: it'll take cajonez to cut into the topsides. And huevos too!

The width of the stripe on 376 is only 1/4"--- and it shows up fine.
