What do I need to look for if I've found a salvaged mast from a boat similar in size to the ariel. How close does the salvaged mast have to be in size to the original ariel mast? Any idea what a fair price would be for the mast?

The Pearson 26 mast would be a good candidate for a retro fit.
Pearson made a gazillion of them and about 1/3 of them belong in a landfill.
The masts are pretty similar, nearly the same dimensions. It may be a case of buying a mast and having to take the boat. I've got a P-26 mast I'd sell you for around $400. but you'd probably almost double that with shipping, you'll have to look locally.

There are several marine salvage stores in FL selling new and used spars.
From the Ebay store pictures they have several not listed but available.
Search: Ebay motors, parts and accessories, sailboat mast.

I saw your 'wanted' add on the Pensacola Craig's list. I assume you have already been scanning it, but if you missed it there was a rig from a Tartan 27 a week or so ago selling IIRC for $400.

Might take a look, I will keep my eyes open.

The man with the Tartan mast now wants 1000 bucks for it. Think I'll keep looking.

I'm no longer looking for the lazarette et al. I've decided the sell or piece out Mariel 162. My heart is heavy. C'est le vie. Damn Ivan.

Selling??:eek::eek:, What are the particulars of this vessel, I may be interested.
Thanks, Carl

If you are discouraged by the price for a used mast, I have a friend that could fix you up with a used spar for a fraction of the price of the one you looked at . I would guess for a couple hundred bucks, He is in the boat salvage business, loves old Alberg designs and will help anyone refitting one. Send me a PM through this site for his name and number, he is located at Lake Lanier, Flowery Branch, GA. To answer your question about a mast replacement, roughly the same size tube within .5 inch- 1 inch. IMHO an ariel carries a pretty hefty mast for a boat it's size so I don't think you would want a larger size tube. You will need new stays and shrouds any way so if they mounted a little different in length it's not going to be a big deal.
Good Luck,, Carl

That's great....... I know you saved me a bunch of money:D:D:D!!!.... The news will also make my wife happy too:rolleyes:.
It's easy to get discouraged on these large projects, I know I do. I get my biggest inspiration from viewing Bill's Periwinkle thread and seeing what he's done with a boat headed to the dumpster to enjoying sails on Narragansett Bay, my boyhood home waters. Ebb's master yacht, Tony G's woodworking skills, Frank's Revival rebuild into a functional cruiser and countless others here. I take something away from the sailor who just as happy to seal up the leaks and put it back in the water and sail.
The founders of this site, along with it's members have, as a group saved this fleet of Ariels' and Commanders' and that, as they say, is something to be proud of!
Good Luck and keep 162's thread updated. Lurkers are looking for ideas to ..... shall we say test in the field:D!

It's easy to get discouraged on these large projects, I know I do. !

Oh yeah, that's why when I pick up a project, I pay cash and move it into my own yard. That way, if I get discouraged or sidetracked I can close it up and 'forget' about it while I do something else. That way I don't have any money going out for storage, and it can sit till I get back to it again.

Think that's the reason you see so many abandoned project boats, people start reworking one, and when it doesn't move along as well as they'd like, they start thinking about the storage fees.

I picked up a black capri 25 mast and boom. Its about 6" shorter than the Ariel mast. Thanks to carl291 for the leads. Captain Michael Duling at Starboard Cove Marina in Flowers Branch on lake Lanier north of Atlanta provided great help in getting it loaded on the trailer. Atlanta traffic is always aggressive. Having a 20' trailer and 5' of mast sticking out was a lot of fun.

Tommy,
Was the price in the ballpark of what I assumed or did I miss it by a mile?
It was my pleasure to assist you with this. As well if you should need help with removing your ailing A-4, just contact me, generally weekends are the only time I have available.
Cheers , Carl

Did you ever find one?

I saw this add on the Pensacola Craig's list;

LIKE NEW MAST AND ALL RIGGING 42 FEET LONG WITH BOOM GREAT CONDITION WAS ON A 27FT CATALINA

I know 42' is way too long, but since it was on a Catalina 27 I doubt that number is correct.

Yes I found a Capri 25 mast. It should work. But now that the a
Auburn Tigers are playing and football season is here, I've gotten distracted. I'll get back soon. Thanks for the support.

Thought I might revive this thread , I purchased an Electra parts boat today in Flowery Branch GA. It came from a boat salvage individual who scraps out boats on a regular bases. He has a yard full of mast, sails, and all types of boating equipment. He doesn't advertise at all, everything is done word of mouth but he did give me permission to post his name and number here. His name is Allen and his phone number is :770*912*808six. To give you an example of his prices, the entire rigging mast ,boom and all standing and running rigging was $250.00. The boat hull less the coamings, tiller, sails, water tank, sink and of course the keel which was whacked off for the lead was $250.00. This boat also came with what appears to be new cushions for the entire interior they are 5 inches thick taper cut to go right against the hull covered in gray cloth on top and vinyl on the bottom. He tried to sell this boat in sail away condition for $1500 and couldn't get an offer, so off to the chopping block it went, sad really. He invited me back to pilfer ( his words) through his entire inventory for anything else I may need.

Man, what I'd give to have a salvage yard like that with in 5 hours drive from here... I think we need a new boom extrusion and there are a lot of sources out there but I'm hesitate to pay the price for shipping right now. Not that they don't deserve it. Just too tight on cash. I'd rather make a day of it and pilfer all that we need in one stop.

Tony,
I've got a few old booms or broken masts that would work for you, as well metric ****-tons of used hardware and odds and ends. Come on down to the cities anytime and pilfer away! I'd love to donate some of my junk to the cause.

Hey Mike! Can I come too?! (I only wish I could... you know what they say; One man's junk is another's treasure!)

How is the Princess? Visiting the Bay anytime soon? I was out for a bit in the rain yesterday... by myself! A bit wet, but plenty of room for 'visitors'...

Rico,
By all means...anytime. I owe you a sail.
With AC34 coming up I'd advise you to be careful with off the cuff invitations.
The poor princess is sitting in a snowbank with a long list of unstarted off season projects. Been too busy to even look at her. One of the projects is appropriate to this thread. Stripping down the mast and having it re anodized.

C227, Mike Just curious, what is going on if anything with the Ensign that went aground last summer? Rebuilding or salvage?? When I picked up the Electra I was thinking a large chunk of the hull would get you started on the rebuild, but little did I know that my wife and grandson were conspiring to make a backyard Pirate ship out of it! Well I guess that is still better than the landfill that it was destine for.
