I was orginally looking for a rigger in the area, and got side tracked with a supposed direct drop-in replacement for an atomic 4.

The BZ482 is a 13.5 Hp kubota based diesel, I sifted through mounds of google hits and found one price quote at 5,800 dollars for the BZ482 (http://list.sailnet.net/read/attachment/75228/1/htmlversion.html).

It's not something I want to do in the near future but maybe a viable option for someone who's stuck with the issue.

Ed,

The homepage link in your profile doesn't work. It gives some message about logging on with edburk1021, then just sends you to AOL. I'd love to see some pics of your boat.

Mike

My e-mail address is eburke1021@aol.com
I don't know if that changes things but you need to put an E at the end.
Let me know if this is helpful.
I have had my renovation documented by the wonderful people at pearsonariel.org , my pictures are in this site somewhere. I will need to catch up to the world again. I hurt my back and have been down for two years.
I am trying to begin the interior now. Looking at proceeding as soon as I know what I am going to do.

I'm not certain of the condition of A-205's Atomic and I am seriously thinking of pulling it and installing a Beta Kubota 10 HP engine. Joe DeMers told me that the 10 should be great in the Ariel. Has anyone any experience with the 10?

I don't have any idea of the condition of A-205's gas Atomic but on the outside it doesn't look all that great. Quite a bit of rust and loose wiring and I'm not a mech.

I'm thinking of pulling it and replacing it with a Beta Kubota 10 which Joe DeMers said should provide plenty of power for the Ariel. Has anyone any experience with this level of HP?

My 13 HP Yanmar has more than enough HP to get up to hull speed in good chop. I think you'd be just fine with 10 HP.

Jon,

I'm no mechanic either but that engine looks better than most of the vehicles I've owned! Getting the A-Bomb out of the cabin is a good idea according to many people because of the gasoline/explosion factor. I guess I've never dug into just how many people blow up their boat because they don't understand the principle of gasoline combustion. One way to look at that is maybe, just maybe, it's human evolution cleansing the gene pool.

Mike is right. 10HP should be more than enough umph to get you into a head wind or bad tide. If you aren't comfortable and confident with working on desiels boning up on maintenance is highly recomend.

Thanks for the comments. The marina that I bought A-205 from was unable to get this A-4 started and without knowing what the engine might need, said that it would probably cost 2500-3000 to pull it, clean it up and go through it to determine what it needs before I even got into paying for wiring and gauges and the reinstall. I think that's a bit high, but what do I know?? I'm more comfortable with getting into a diesel and learning to work on that one from the ground up. The 10HP is apparently considerably smaller than the Atomic and I might even gain some wiggle room so that I can service it when I need to.
