View Full Version : Sailing from L.A. to San Francisco????

I was thinking about buying an Ariel in the L.A. area and sailing it uphill to S.F. The broker made it sound like an impossible task. He can't imagine not trucking it. If I wanted to truck it everywhere I would be shopping for a TRUCKBOAT; not a SAILBOAT. Any Ideas? When to leave? etc...
In yet another turn of events I happen to get sucked into, I may be looking to sail my Commander from San Francisco to LA... as I may be headed there...(more on the details as they sort themselves out...)
I am in the process of building a trailer BTW... - Not to have a 'truckboat' as you say; but more in the hopes of eventually sailing down in the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California - the one in the Baja California Peninsula) in a single direction... And for storage in the dry.
I have been there many times but I've always wanted to sail the gulf.
Here is someone's site on the experience...

Too bad we are not going the same direction - That would be good for company. You at least have it right - the Bay area is the best place for a Pearson.
I imagine that the best times for heading North might be different from the times better for heading south.... In any case I'd also appreciate some insight from those familiar with the intricacies of going either way as I'll definitely plan to do the trip back.
Apologies if this is too much of a hijack!

take full advantage of the off-shore land breeze.it occurs at nite an' its kinda like cheating.the wind blows off the land and makes fer' fantastic go-innz.the sea flattens out an'ya can sail all nite, (if it wuz me, no mo' than full main an'workin.jib) uphill-should you do this---the sunrises and sunsets will remain in your memory forever.done this many times.it varies as to what time this wind occurs---{usually no more than 10-15 kts} but it is there .from what I can recall much of september is lite air in the daytime.have more than one outboard.know your range under power. carry mucho fuel.on deck not inside.this means sailing thru the nite---motoring all day ---this can be a wonderful addition to your experience envelope when you are properly prepaired.also---that pacific coast is very inhospitable---stay several miles off the coast---lest yee have the ability to "walk home" try to have some sort of auto pilot.remember the key to any successful voyage is prepairedness.drag handlines fer' fishin---an'remember this---should you go it alone---its cuz'-----no one else wansta' go---dont let this stop you. :D
