Practical Sailor on the back of their May 1 issue have an important tip for us on how to apply Epifanes' varnish. In fact the method reminds me of an article years ago, I think in Wooden Boat, that was an interview with a famous EastCoast varnisher. Famous for his results - his method, basicly, was to slap it on FAST every-which-a-way without regard to bubbles or grain. Epifanes to P.S. say nearly the same.

Coverage, coverage, coverage. Get that varnish on, as much as you can. That's my rule.

On horizontal surfaces, put it on as thick as possible.

On vertical surfaces, lay it on thick, almost to the point of sagging.

You have to be neat, or you'll spend extra time cleaning up runs. But, I'm not going to go nuts trying to get a mirror finish. I'd have to sand too much varnish off between coats.
