    Who Wants In? Commander Window Frames?

    Hello Pearson folks,
    We are in the process of replacing our windows and frames for our Commander. We were just curious if any other sailors out there were interested in doing the same thing? We were going to have a run of them made, cut and everything, made domestically to be exact replicas of the original ones. Stainless steal frames seem like the best material to use for the frames.
    Anyone else out there interested in going in with us, as a group, and making their windows bristol? Maybe we could get a better price if three or four of us went in together and ordered windows/frames.
    Anyone interested, who is not in the Bay Area ( i.e. east coast), we could ship your windows to you.

    can you get approx cost

    Could you post approx cost. Might be nice to put in new depending on how much work and cost involved. How easy is t do take out old and put in new anyway?

    Yes Ma'am, I might be interested. We rebuilt, with the good old heliarc, the old aluminum frames in '93, put in Lexan panels, bedded everything nicely, but now it's tired again and foggy and cracky. But need to know if my Ariel frames are the same ones the high performance Commander uses. SS would probably be the way to go, 316 grade I guess. Others here more astute in this area. Give us more details as ya get 'em, and thanks.

    If this doesn't work out for you - and Commander and Ariel aluminum lights are different - have you considered the alternative of refurbishing the originals?

    338's were generally in pretty good shape. Required effort and chemicals to remove silicone caulking inside and out. Patched old holes (not the original pattern holes) and corrosion pitting with Lab Metal, an aluminum filler used in auto restoration.

    Then they got powder coated with a hybrid metalic patina bronze color and clear coated. Relatively expensive but now that wallet-shock* has subsided, all the frames look fabulous.

    This might also be done in a group to lower costs.


    *Had the tiny Ariel aluminum opening ports done also, which have a bunch of parts, and raised the cost.

    Powder coaters use silicone plugs to keep the coating out of miniscule threaded holes used to fasten the inside to the outside frame. But 338's were drilled through and now will have flat or oval headed machine screws thru from the outside with crown nuts on the inside frame. The through holes and countersinking was done befor so powder coating would help isolate the silicone bronze fasteners I want to use. Copper and aluminum really don't like each other - so I'll put on anything else I can think of to isolate the two alloys.

    The commander and the aerial have different size windows. But I did look at a Web site for the Elektra and but it might have the same windows as the commander? Any ideas on this?

    I am looking into cost estimates. Currently the cheapest way is to cast them. I'm not sure if the original windows were made this way?

    I am looking into the cost difference between casting them in bronze and having them chromed or having them cast in aluminum and then anodize.

    Would the commander/ariel Association have any interest in Purchasing some of these Windows for future projects? It would be nice if the association had a stash of hard to find parts of to continue the restoration of these boats.

    I am interested, but I am of the opinion that they should be replicated in bronze. The original, aluminum parts are cast, I believe. It would need to be a casting, I beleive, to easily replicate the profile (rounded outer surface.)

    They could of course be chromed if you want the original look. I'd go for the green patina of bronze, personally.

    I might be interested in 4 frames.

    Why are you replacing your frames? Pitted?

    Would that include glass?

    Have you ever arrived at an approx. cost?

    We are still working with the Metal fabricators.

    We have found a good place that can make bronze castings. But I need to take off my window to get an accurate quote. I'm a bit frightened to remove the window until we are ready to replace them because of rain and what not.

    we are looking into pricing for the actual windows as well. So far it seems the best bet would be to make them from Lexan.

    So I should be able to get an idea of pricing for just the windows and for the frames and Windows together.

    I figure I should have pricing ready in 2 or 3 weeks. I will be sure to post it on this board.

    I would be interested in 4 frames since 2 have cracks I have the windows out of my boat and I am certain they are cast after looking at them again
