    Thumbs up A-282 Panacea

Hello! I'm the new owner of A282 and hope to add my experiences and learn from your site. I just bought her (in Annapolis) and sailed her nearly 80 miles north to the Bohemia (near Chesapeake City). What a weekend! Some accidental jibes, beached her at Fairlee (looking for gas), and hit 5.8 mph (under sail) under the Route 50 bridge & across Love Point. This is my first sailboat and I think I'm gonna be OK!

I know I'm going to love this boat. She needs some love this winter, but with the help of this website, I'll be reporting great weekend trips all next season.

Anyhow, pics to come I promise. Plenty of details; good old stuff (gimbal cup holders, cherry ice box & fuse panel) - and of course some nice new toys (GPSmap 430x with the G2 vision card, FF), and soon to come (rod holders, solar panels and dolby 5.1 speaker setup ).

OK kids, thanks again for a great site - I've already read a ton waiting for my account to get approved.

    DH

congratulations! Nice way to start a relationship with your boat. You're allready rating high on my envious chart.

We're glad you brought up pics in your first post. Way to go! I don't believe there is a limit to how many so just start as soon as you can.

    Inboard Conversion?

It took me a while to get used to the waterline being visible in the sink. This is my least favorite part of the boat

I live next door to a great upholstery guy, so I got that goin for me

The fuse panel works well. All the wires run OK 'cept the Blower (blue) now switches the chart plotter and the Auxillary (or whatever it reads) will be for the stereo (if I ever get around to that).

Windows are near the top of the list. LOTS of water portside last trip. Good thing I was sleeping starboard

$30 solar panel for kicks (I always wanted one of these things).

This is where the steel bar goes huh? How much of a priority should I make that?

BRING IN THE BLEACH! Couple more scrubs and then I'm repaint with Kilz and speck with some baby blue. Keep it cheap

They sure don't build boats like they used to...

The lights work fine, and I guess the outlets under the bulb are 12v? Where do you guys mount your flatscreen DVD combo?

Here's where the thread goes dirty - and it's not what your hoping...

OUCH. Portside bowrail anchor 1 from below deck. Don't worry, it gets worse. I spare the details for a later thread. It wasn't all my fault :P

Think I can get this pump faucet working again?

Imagine opening the sailbag and seeing this:

Someone pass me a cold 'un.

Gee, I can't wait to replace these

Thumbs up Welcome aboard & Congrats!

Congrats on the new boat and thanks for the pictures! She sure looks clean without the life lines. Bright work looks good, she seems to have been kept up well.

Look forward to hearing more of your adventures, Welcome aboard!

    OBTW, I LOVE this.

.....beached her at Fairlee (looking for gas), ......
I have been known to 'Park' Faith too, if the bottom is right, you can hop off of the bow and the water does not even come up to your knees. Don't recommend trying that with a 'modern' fin keel.

    Bohemia, MD?

    Welcome DH,

I keep Haabet (#133) on the Bohemia River. Where are you? We are laid up for the winter at Long Point, Marina. It will be fun to meet up at some point. I'm down most weekends.

There are at least three Ariels and my Commander in Young's Boat Yard over by Sparrow's Point on the Patapsco. Phil Young owns one of the Ariels. Not exactly a leisurely cruise for you but someday you might want to let me know and drop by if you want to see some of the rest of the fleet.

Whew... Just uploaded those pics. Took a few minutes. I'm at Bohemia Bay Yacht Harbour for the winter, and I'm thinking about staying at a mooring next season. Nice place, nice people, and less than 45 minutes from home.

I'd love to cruise with some other Ariels. Sounds like there are enough around to maybe raft up and get a good photo.

It's dinner time for me. All the pics are here:

(for you guys that just can't get enough)

Yeah, it's going to be a lot of work, but I'm very excited.

Cool A282 back in the water - MAYBE NEXT YEAR?

Certainly not the prettiest boat in the yard, I know. But I swallowed my pride, wrote the check, and handed over the mooring lines. No way I could keep her dry any longer - I hate when boats sit out of water too long. That's bad luck to me. Someone said I should change the name to "MAYBE NEXT YEAR." I guess I say that a lot around the yard lol.

Anyhow, PANACEA (1965, #282) on the Bohemia (upper Chessie) - see you fools out there. Just tell all the guys in Hunters to look for the blue dots as I blow by 'em.

Ha, all joking aside, anyone race the Chessie area? I met an older guy with an Alberg that races the Good Old Boat race (and a few others). You basically get a handicap right? Any leads on where to start would be awesome.

Upper eighties all weekend here in the NEast - 5~10. I'm hoping for some sailing pics tomorrow. Wish me luck - thanks for the cool site...

I find that tough to believe.

I appreciate the photos you loaded to Flickr, I never get tired of looking at these boats. Nice work, pretty clever solar mount there, does it keep your battery topped up?

I bet you will find the PHRF handicap give you a pretty good shot at being competitive. If not at first, stick with it. Racing is a great teacher, I bet most cruisers would benefit from some time going around the bouys. I was fortunate to find a club where it was pretty relaxed (at least on the surface).

Something about getting passed by another boat really makes you work to figure it out.... feels good to make some progress.

PHRF for Ariels and Commanders usually run somewhere between 240 and 300 (SF Bay Area is 258). With a little breeze, these boats really beat their handicap! Super clean bottom, newer sails and good sail control pay off big time. It took me three or four seasons of racing to go from the back of the pack to somewhere in the middle . . . While Ed and Ernie in Pathfinder were sailing miles ahead . . . But, it was great FUN!
