    Viagra and bad sailing

Watching the World Series tonight. Had to rewind a Viagra commercial (of all things) about 5 times to figure out why it was striking me funny. Our Viagra Guy is sailing a 30 footer or so and per the commercial "knows what needs to be done" after the mainsheet block's shackle breaks away from his boom. He fixes the problem MacGyver-style without breaking a sweat. As he sails off self-assured upwind, tacking (I guess) with the wind to starboard, his jib clew is hauled tight to starboard, the upper leech is to port and the rest of the jib is begging to be let go to port straining against the mast. I don't think his intention is heaving to... and in his serenity, he is making no moves to release the jib sheet.

He must be distracted by his evening to come.

I know not much of the TV viewership gives a flip, but I would assume a sailing advisor was on the set. "Uh, that isn't supposed to happen."

It was this frame that kept making me squint at the screen - "What the...?" You can see how the horizontal lines on the upper leech are concave to port, ...and the clew to stbd ain't goin' nowhere.

When the video gets posted to their website, I'll post it.

Are you sure he was not heaving too and planning a little rendezvous with the admirial in the cabin????? You never know when the moment will be right.

Like you I am amazed at the total lack of sailing knowledge displayed on TV. I think a large part of the population likes the romantic aspects of sailing but has no clue of what it is really about. And those darn sailboats just won't cooperate with the camera man's direction either.

Ha! Good catch Kyle! I usually tune out after the thing breaks when the wind is howling at like 2 knots. But I'm forever wondering what in the world I will say to my 10 year old when he asks what this commercial is advertising. Can't they put those kinds of commercials on later - AFTER bedtime??

HA! Yes Jerry, maybe he's sitting tight in the cockpit making sure his sails are going to keep him still for a minute...

I've seen that commercial and I think this boat is moving under engine power. You can tell by this sailor's jaw though that he's the real deal.

what on earth is he doing?*

I've got onto the boat's mast finally again as good weather is ending.
And went to find the "Mast issues & renovation" thread.
Because I have a couple questions. Over there.

commanderpete has one of his funny fotos, this one an ad too, [where has he been?] on that thread (post #42) with a so very appropriate comment.
The guy is wisely looking up at sail trim, or maybe seagull poop descending.
We can tell this fellow knows what's what also from the set of his jaw,
but he is holding the sheet while sitting on deck at the mast!

Does this fit what you guys are talking about!!!!
