    Winter Sailing

Here's what 48" of accumulated snow looked like on my Commander. This was taken 2 days after the second big storm in February. Storm I dropped 22". Storm II dropped 26".

I know of some boats left in the water over bubblers that sank. If the sun began melting snow either port or starboard the loads shifted, the boats heeled and a few of the smaller ones down-flooded and sank. Fore and aft shifts led to some taking water in exhaust ports. Some were still sinking up to a week later as condensation on the cold snow added weight and the boats went lower in the water almost imperceptibly but steadily.

Streets and sidewalks just began to clear this week so, of course, another storm is coming through. While not on the scale of the snow-mageddon pictured here, the 3"-4" Baltimore is due for is very unwelcome.
