The 2016 Hoppe Memorial Regatta ended in abandonment! The stalwart contestants were caught in the wind shadow on the back of Angel Island and could not extract themselves without resort to power. Their struggle lasted three hours until it was clear that even if they did drift into some wind, it would be too late to make the 1700 hr race deadline. At that point, the race committee called for the abandonment of the 2016 Hoppe Memorial Regatta.

Disappointed contestants and race committee members drowned their sorrows at the Encial Yacht Club post race gathering. It’s pretty clear that next year’s tactics will include giving the back side of Angel Island it’s due respect!

The date for the 2017 Hoppe Memorial Regatta is under discussion and will be announced soon. Watch this space . . .
