Greetings from a new member in Michigan.

My sailing experience began in the 60s on an ore freighter out of Chicago. I currently sail a Wayfarer dinghy but my wife says if we're going out for a couple of weeks at a time, we need a cabin. Oh, well, I'm just lucky, I guess.

I could use a little luck and help with finding a nice Ariel--something we can use right away. I have a career's worth of land-based building skills although I don't really want to take on a project. I want to sail the Georgian Bay. If anyone knows of anything, please pass it my way.

I called on the Ariel in CT mentioned further down in this forum. It sold two months ago for $2,800! Such a deal. The seller took the time to tell me all about how nice she was! And I listened! My heart!

I also ran across three Ariels in Detroit that while not basket cases yet, they each certainly do have one foot in the basket. They are hull numbers 39, 135 and 297. Very soft decks all around. Some holes where stanchions pulled out. Badly neglected, I'd say.

But there has got to be something! Here's hoping. Thanks for your help.

I manage to snatch two Electras from the jaws of death this weekend! One Electra on a cradle from upstate NY, and one Electra from MD that was headed to the scrap heap. The NY boat, I know little about other than it needs a refit..... ( what's new???) , comes with all riggging and complete set of sails. The MD boat was sailed up until last Summer. The MD boat was owned by an elderly couple, when they got too old to sail ( how old is that anyway?) they gave it to neighbors to use. It got passed through the neighborhood to use until last Fall when it was hauled out. The marina discovered that the mast base was sinking into the deck and told the owners it was too dangerous to sail. The marina was supposed to give a estimate to repair but never did, so the present owners decided to junk it out or find someone willing to haul it off and repair. Comes with multiple headsails , main and a spinnaker. I'll have to build a cradle before going after this one. I have two trips coming up to bring these boats to GA.... 2700 miles, 10 miles per gallon, $4.00 per gallon, GEEZ!!! even free/cheap has gotten expensive!!

Ebb,

Here's a closer look at exactly what we have just been talking about. I took this photo about two weeks ago. She retains her original deck gel coat and you can clearly see the cracks and subsequent water entry points around the cockpit sole and rudder shaft tube.

I believe it comes down to compromise and profit margins. That's why you have builders that can charge and command a premium (high end) vessels, and others that can still build a worthy vessel, albeit not free from future water ingress issues. After all doesn't it all come down to time? Much less time to do it the way they did, and besides, were they thinking of durability, structural integrity and water proofness of this very point from future decades of service?

What came first, I wonder? Was the hull and deck joined, then the shaft tube installed? (would have been a bear to glass in the tube under the cockpit this way). Perhaps the tube was installed, a bit longer than needed, then the deck / cockpit structure lowered over the hull and a hole made to allow the shaft tube to penetrate as the deck was lowered in a controlled motion.

I wonder if Pearson Yachts sat around and discussed the future vitality of our beloved Commanders and Ariels. Would they have agreed and even guessed that there would, after 40 years, still be a loyal following to such a model?

In the photo you can also clearly see what not to do. An owner created an oblong hole in the cockpit side wall, for anchillary functions of an outboard.

There is also a scum reveal line left from where the water level was in the cockpit, prior to me boarding her, and clearing debri from her cockpit scuppers so that she could self bail.

*Please note, I had permission from the owner of this vessel to board her and take photos.

I just finished painting the deck of Full and By, C-295 and learned a bunch even though it is my third project like this in the last 15 years. New materials, new techniques, poor memory, old age, etc... I love to use Interlux high end products..they produce excellent results. I though I'd share the following and post some pics, maybe help out some other goo-old-boat-sicko out there. basic steps:

1. Pick the right boat to start with...one that has never been painted. Life is definitely too short to start by removing paint from a PO's botched deck job.
2. Repair soft deck areas, fill holes that won't be used..old instrument holes, deck plates, etc. Don't forget the dings on the outside of the toerail.
3. install new deck hardware temporarily that you intend to reinstall permanently. Remove. Refill holes with filled epoxy, then drill 1/8 in locating holes in the filled holes so you can tell them from the old ones you will conceal with paint
3.1 Remove the rub rail!
4. Dremel out the large gelcoat spider cracks, only the big ones
5. Sand the existing non-skid areas with 60 grit to knock off the tops of the teeth, and sand areas to receive high-gloss trim paint flat, and down to 220 grit. vacuum, wipe and tack before painting each coat
6. Layout trim borders with fine line pencil where these differ from the original non-skid pattern. Be sure areas are dirt free.
7. Mask the trim areas with the highest quality masking tape. I formerly used only 3M plastic fine line tape for this,, but the new green masking tape from Home Depot works well and costs about half. BUT, you do need to use 3M Fine line plastic tape in 1/4 in width for each corner radius, it you've added them. Vacuum, wipe and tack
8. Two coats of Interlux Epoxy Prime Coat, sanding to at least 180 between coats to level the minor whoopees . Might take three, depending. Use the small diameter white foam rollers from Home Depot instead of the west system rollers. Yes, they will get attacked by the solvents...but you cannot compare the finish! roll paint on, flatten with one pass of a foam brush. for one coat, you'll go through three rollers and two brushes.
9. Two or three coats of Perfection two part linear polyurethane, sanding between coats to 320
10 Remove masking tape, and apply masking tape for the opposite side of the line...mask of the non-skid.
10.1 Cut carpet scraps for strategic high-traffic areas..the ones you'll damage when you are re assembling the boat...set these aside
11. hit the deck again with 80 grit just where you dropped trim paint, epoxy, etc....
12. vacuum and wipe down with damp cloth. DO NOT use any solvents to wipe anything down after you've masked!
13. Roll on un thinned KiwiGrip non-skid with the same foam roller you used before...this is not a texture coat, but a color coat! if you have a dark deck, do this twice. One coat like this takes about half a liter (Kiwi grip is sold in liters). Buy the 4 liter can of KiwiGrip and you'll have some (little less than a quarter of the can) left over for repairs later.
14. Practice for the final coat...the KiwiGrip instructions say that you'll get better as you go along and I did. By the time I finished painting the boat, I knew how to do it properly..and that's a little late...
15. Paint the final texture coat of KiwiGrip per the instructions...EXACTLY.
16. remove tape and reassemble your new boat

some interesting facts:

Trim: One coat of either epoxy primer or Perfection will consume about half a quart of material. layout and masking takes about 6-8 hours. sanding between coats takes about 3 hours. initial sanding took....Jeezus....days. Applying one coat took about 3.5 hours

Non-skid: I would use KiwiGrip again for sure, especially now that I know how to get it down pretty well. In the past, I used Perfection with non-skid polyumeric beads for non skid and it worked ok, but prep time is huge and the surface is inferior non-skidwise, inho. A commander takes a little less than 4 liters.

questions? fire away

Hello all,

I know, I know, It's not a great Commander or an Ariel, but it's still a classic Alberg design that I now find myself steward of. So..., based on a few folks on this wonderful forum who have expressed an interest in my latest vessel endeavors, here's her debut:

Her lines were orinally drawn in 1959 by Carl Alberg and she was marketed as the "ALBERG 23", later changed to Sea Sprite 23. This vessel is hull # 760, built in 1982 by C. E. Ryder.

She has not been in the water in over 10 years and I have addressed about all the issues that come with unknowing previous owners, deferred maintenance and a slight bit of neglect. With that being said however, she was not in bad shape by any means, just needed some of the classic TLC and a caring new steward.

Thank you,
