2017 hoppe regatta race insructions for june 10, event

Saturday, June 10, 2017 is the date for this year's San Francisco Bay's Hoppe Regatta!

BACKGROUND: The Hoppe Memorial Regatta is a fun race for Ariel and Commander skippers. The principle requirement is that the race be short and fun.

START: The start / finish line is located off the Corinthian Yacht Club in Raccoon Strait. The power cruiser SOLSTICE is the committee boat and the green channel marker to its port is the pin end of the starting line. The race will start at 1300 hours (1:00 PM). (Prepatory signal 1250 hours, warning signal 1255 hours.). The start will be announced on channel 71.

(NOTE: course must be completed by 1600 hrs.)

COURSE: Sail around Angel Island in either direction.

RESTRICTED AREA: Do not sail inside the Point Blunt marker on the NE side of the island.

FINISH: SOLSTICE - where you began.

CURRENTS: Be sure to check your tidal charts, they may be important to your strategy. Note too, that currents near Angel Island are 15 to 20 minutes after max at the Golden Gate. An old sailing adage is “hold to the beach.” Also, be aware of the major wind shadow behind Angel Island.

PROTESTS: No protests will be allowed. Rules of the road apply. First qualified boat to finish wins.

ALLOWANCES & HANDICAPS: No allowances for BBQ grills, TVs, excessive tools, supplies, cruising gear or overweight crew.

REGISTRATION: Just let us know if you plan to participate in the Hoppe Regatta. You may E-mail your intention to participate to rphelon (AT) juno (dot) com, or call Bill Phelon (925) 254-8338. No one will be turned away if they don't register, but they might not get a start or a finish if we don't know they are there – after all, the race committee may be busy with cocktails.

AWARDS GATHERING: The regatta should end early enough to give everyone plenty of time to get to Encinal Yacht Club for the 6:00 PM awards gathering.

how many Ariels and Commanders are in this race?

So far, we've had two confirmations. There have been as many as four A-C's in resent years. But, there have also been as few as one :(

Thanks for doing the leg work to put this together each year for the group. As a past competitor I wish more people and boats could/would show up for this event. The Ariel/Commander are great little yachts and without people willing to come out and join, the day is coming I’m afraid that the organization that supports all of us is just going to fade away.
This little regatta has been going for many decades and has always been about the social aspect of the sailing more that the competition. We had as many as twelve and more boats show up for this event, and they would come from all over. I can recall even having people sail with us on Pathfinder that came from New York and Chicago. Local boats came from all over northern CA.
This boat class is important to the history of yacht design and class racing to just let it fade away. I encourage you, if able please join in with the fun. My home port of Santa Cruz coined the phrase of “Fast is Fun”, how about the Hoppe Regatta use the words “FREE and FUN" . Have a great weekend all……..ed

I have a question, any background on the boat Jubilee? The skipper Don Morrison seemed to have a lot of success with this event, He must of been a good racer with a well sorted boat, lot of wins over multiple decades (65 into the 90's).

We raced the #75 boat for many years and watched him win many many races. I feel a key to his success was knowing the SF Bay better than most and a crew that was with him for over twenty years. Of course with Don at the helm it was almost impossible to beat.
