Hey Gang,
In the process of putting Ariel hull #412 back into sailing trim...one thing on a long list is re-rigging. I'm sure this is listed somewhere on the forum but I can't seem to find it.. what dimension wire is the standing rigging? How about the chainplates?
I'm considering replacing the stainless wire rope with the new synthetic stuff- Dyneema Dux. Anyone have direct experience with the stuff?
Thanks, doing the blog thing over at

Welcome, your Ariel blog is nice.
I haven't had any experience with synthetic standing rigging on an Ariel. But I have seen it used well on other boats. The ability to make up a standing rig with just the tools needed to make eye splices is pretty cool. I've seen boats that were mixed between stainless and synthetic. Backstay and spreader shrouds synthetic while the lower shrouds and forestay are stainless. Do you really need to replace your stainless? I know original Ariel rigging is old, but it is oversized, compared to newer boats and well made.

I've been mulling over the idea replacing my lowers with the stuff. I found a meat hook on one of mine a few seasons back when I hauled.
Colligo Marine has a quote on their website attributed to Brian Toss: "In the future, people will think of wire rope as a 150-year anomoly (sic) in the history of rigging."
On another note, wasn't "Old Salt" the Ariel with the enclosed head that was for sale in VA a while back? She looked like a great boat!
(Finally able to get on the forum today. Woo hoo!)

Hey folks,
Old Salt is indeed the VA boat with the enclosed head, although I'm not sure you could actually close the door while using the head, a bit tight in there. I'm not sure how old the rigging is, but I figure it's time for update. If I end up going with the synthetic stuff, I may keep the fore stay stainless: it seems easier than replacing every hank on the 4 headsails that came with the boat. I'll let you guys know! Also, as far as I can tell the diameter on the wire rigging is 3/16, that sound right?

Heya folks,
Getting pretty close to re-launching Ariel #412, she's been on the hard for almost two years getting some long deferred TLC. I'm a longtime-lurker here on the forums, the information contained on these pages has been invaluable. Thought I'd share a glamour shot or two...
Been doing the blog thing a bit over yonder as well... https://thebonnieboat.wordpress.com/2015/05/28/bacon-sails-and-the-myth-of-the-previous-owner/ I had an interesting conversation with an ex-Ariel owner in Annapolis.

Maiden voyage! After almost two years finally got her out sailing. The forum has been a great resource, the boat to-do list is ever expanding, so I'll be sticking around for sure! More over yonder... https://thebonnieboat.wordpress.com/2015/08/27/maiden-voyage/
Many many congrats! She looks great. Now it's time to enjoy all your hard work...
