Just wanted to post a picture of some early Self tailing Winches I just picked up. The small stamping on top is a three pronged fork in a circle very much like like the Pearson logo. I thought they would make some interesting book ends but if someone needs them for a period correct restoration they are available for sale. They are functional. I don't have the winch handle

What a find. They probably have more value as a collectable then anything else. Very cool.

Nice find Carl. The trident trademark was used by Merriman Brothers, the top manufacturer of sailing hardware in their day. Don't know if I'd call them self-tailing winches, more of a combination winch and jam-cleat. Hmm, they would make a nice pair of spinnaker winches for an S-Boat.

Thanks Ben, I felt that you could shed some light on these. They are interesting. If you could use them on some of your wonderful projects, I would be very Pleased to pass them along. I turned down but still have access to some very large bronze winches, twice to three times this size. I only have the option on the large ones for about 2 weeks.

Carl can you give some measurements on the winches and how much you are looking to get for them?
The big winches that you have on option can be problematic to find a home for, most antique sailboats big enough to use them will sporting modern self-tailers. Guess they also don't use cotton sails and hemp lines. The modern world is such a slippery slope! Still, I hope they don't scrap those winches!!!

Ben, The overall height is: 4.25". The width at the base is: 3.5". The narrowest part of the drum width is : 1.75". Both of the winches ratchett and all the springs are all good on the jamcleat. I see no parts missing, damaged or replaced on either one. I value these at $200 for the pair. If you have a need for them, Please let me know by Friday and I can get them shipped to you post haste. Otherwise it will be two plus weeks before I will have an opportunity to do so. We can work the payment out later.
The large winches are available but will not be scraped out , it's part of a larger collection of old bronze hardware.

Hey Carl, found an original winch handle that fits those beautiful Merriman Brothers bottom handle winches. Can't be many of these left around. Don't know if I should use it on the boat or put it in a safe deposit vault.
