JUNE 29, 2013, is the date when the Hoppe Memorial Regatta for Ariel and Commander skippers will take place on San Francisco Bay. This annual race is always filled with fun, excitement and suspense for the competitors. -- Did you pick the preferred direction around Angel Island? Where did that "wind hole" come from? Don't see anyone else, so am I leading or way behind? Current? What current?

And remember, there's the "awards gathering" following the race at the Encinal Yacht Club where you can share Stories and Excuses, ;) Good food and Comradery.

Official notice and race instructions will be posted soon.

CURRENTS: Be sure to check your tidal charts, they may be important to your strategy. Note too, that currents near Angel Island are 15 to 20 minutes after max at the Golden Gate. An old sailing adage is “hold to the beach.” Also, be aware of the major wind shadow behind Angel Island.

PROTESTS: No protests will be allowed. Rules of the road apply. First qualified boat to finish wins.

ALLOWANCES & HANDICAPS: No allowances for BBQ grills, TVs, excessive tools, supplies, cruising gear or overweight crew.

REGISTRATION: Just let us know if you plan to participate in the Hoppe Regatta. You may E-mail your intention to participate to rphelon (AT) juno (dot) com, or call Bill Phelon (925) 254-8338. No one will be turned away if they don't register, but they might not get a start or a finish if we don't know they are there – after all, the race committee may be busy with cocktails.

AWARDS GATHERING: The regatta should end early enough to give everyone plenty of time to get to the Encinal Yacht Club for the 6:00 PM awards gathering. If you plan on sailing in, please let us know ahead of time so that we may arrange berthing.

The 2013 Hoppe Regatta began on a beautiful day on San Francisco Bay. The stalwart Race Committee on the MV SOLSTICE (Kent & Claudia Smith, Bill Phelon and ship’s Captain Larry Rosenfeld) was on station and ready for to sound the starting signals.

What began as a sunny, clear near windless morning, became a sunny, clear and moderately breezy afternoon by the scheduled 1:00 PM start. The only question for the contestants: which direction around Angel Island would be the best choice? The race was starting near the beginning of a flood tide, which along with the breeze, was coming directly East toward the Island. Also to consider was the wind shadow lurking on the West side of the Island. Just how far East will it be necessary to sail to avoid it? Decisions, decisions.

The scheduled 1:00 PM start was delayed ten minutes do to gear problems on one of the contestant’s yacht. Then, following the “prepatory” and warning signals, the race began precisely at 1:10 PM. The Commander of Jeff & Pat Sullivan, NEMESIS #151, was over first followed shortly by the Ariel of Robbie Benson, LADY J #312. Both boats chose to round the Island in the clockwise direction and were soon lost to sight as they disappeared behind the Island and into the “lurking” wind shadow – or not.

Mostly “not.” It took NEMESIS only an hour and 47 minutes to round Angel Island to take the winning “gun” with an official arrival time of 2:47 PM. The second place boat, LADY J, crossed the finish line at 3:16 PM, having suffered the vagaries of the wind and tides on the South side of the Island.

The gala awards dinner saw fourteen captains, crew, race committee and family members present to see Jeff, Pat & Kevin Sullivan awarded the Hoppe Perpetual trophy along with a “keeper” bottle of Veuve Clicquot champagne. Everyone reported having a great day on the water, especially since they avoided the scorching heat wave that was pummeling much of the area.

The date for the 2014 Hoppe has not been determined, but with no interference from an America’s Cup event, it will likely be a Saturday in July or August. Look for a notice around January or February after the YRA calendar is posted.
