Original chock!

Looking to replace the stern chock that snapped during a storm this fall. I took my broken one to three different welders and each said its cast composition wasn't repairable.

I'd really like to maintain the original hardware if anyone has a chock to sell to me.

Can't be welded? Those welders must think that chock is made out of pot metal, they are not. You need to find a welder with a AC TIG welder who has the skills to weld aluminum and shame them into doing the work. Those chocks will go back together like bread and butter. The orginal Ariel bow chocks I welded two years ago have held up fine.

Is 47yo pot metal hard to distinguish from 47yo aluminum? I wouldn't have a clue. They said it was pot metal and wouldn't hold. My stand-by welder seems to be on a protracted vacation. I'll hit him up whenever he returns.

IIRC, it is known as 'Marium' (sp?) which is an aluminum alloy.

I have been searching for the ice box latch for months, while I have no come across it yet I did find 3 of the original chocks. Do me a favor and take a picture of the one you need. If I have it, I will be happy to pass it along.

Almag 35 is ledgendary cast aluminum. Use that for searches.

Marinium. I don't know that Perko owns that name, but it also is a high strength aluminum casting material. But it still is aluminum.
Perko makes some fittings you find in their catalog. It looks like they are using old molds.
If that is the case they have selected the most useless fittings imaginable.
Don't know that I trust Perko.

That old skene chock would translate into a stunning bronze fitting for the A/C. In my personal opinion, one or two sizes up: 5.5, 6, even 7 inches. It looks like it would be real kind to line.

If you had a complete aluminum chock or glued that broken one together,
you could take it to a foundry and have them cast it in silicon bronze. Take its mate and have a handed pair cast!
Wouldn't be too pricey, and would last at least 5,300 years.

Which part or is it both parts? I'm not at home and won't be till the middle of next week, I may be able to help you out. (Not by finding yours, but maybe replacing it) Here's a tip that ALWAYS works for me, Forget about it and go hunt something else.... then you'll have to move the latch 3 times before you remember that's what you were actually looking for.

Looking to upgrade my chocks to something stronger but at least resembling original. I'd prefer not to drill new holes - or at least have the base of the new chock cover the old holes.

Snapped two chocks - again - (sorry Craig) in a fall storm before hauling last year. Part of this has to do with my dockage. We rarely get weather from dead-north, but when it comes from there I'm least protected, and it is usually a whopper. I need to set up some snubbers to ease the strain on the boat.

So, back in the market for 4 skene chocks. The originals (pictured by Craig above) are center-to-center 4 7/8" and 5 3/4" x 1 1/4". Nowadays, it seems chocks that large are for 3/4 - 1" line. Anyone have a product in mind?

No apology necessary. I'm aware now that 50 year old pot metal probably isn't a good material for making rock climbing carabiners :eek:

I think if I was going to repair these, I would see about having a 3/16" plate of T6 welded on the bottom side.
