View Full Version : Best Winter Sailing in the U.S.?
Just viewed the beautiful picture of CommanderPete's boat, still in the water but sadly covered with snow. Up here in Massachusetts, my boat's sitting under a tree and I'm not looking forward to the next 5 months at the helm of my easy chair. There's gotta be a better way, so here's my question. If a New England sailor were to relocate to sail all winter, where would he find the best winter sailing in the U.S.?

I sail there every year the second week of November as a birthday presant to myself. I have sailed there the last 4 years in a row and this year was the worst weather we have encountered there thanks to tropical storm Ida. And even this year we sailed 5 out of 6 possible sailing days and the shortest day was a 26 nautical mile sail. Normally we average 12 to 15 mph winds but this year the average was closer to 22 mph for the whole time we were there.
By the second week of Nov. we have usually had a cold snap that really cuts down on the bug population which makes anchoring out a lot nicer and the weather is usually clear and middle 70's occasionally getting a bit warmer early afternoon.
Next year I plan to sail my commander down from the Dunedin area to Charlotte Harbor for the Nov. cruise and I am working as hard as I can to get the refit done in time to do that.
