Yep....he left from Brier Island Nova Scotia Canada !!! (called westport til a few years back) Judy's mom and dad are from there...only way in or out is boat. Slocum had a real good/simple tactic for security at night...sprinkle thumb tacks on deck !!

heya doin Frank.
Maybe over to epiphany's site (far sea?)
it might be a good subject for a long term thread -
exactly what are the options available to a cruiser
that doesn't carry far arms...

Nowadays instead of tacks a self-sufficient skipper might spray on
some slick greasey stuff, 'deck pam', that would topple an intruder.
Then what? Bear pepper spray? Long range. Be good to exhaust
the subject. How about an inflatable machinegun that would slowly
rise up
out of the forward hatch....

Lift a glass to the old boy who started it all.....!

Back in '88 I made the trek to Cape Desolation at the head of Fundy to see the Slocum monument .
Spent the night on Brier Island which separates Bay of Fundy from St. Mary's Bay. One hell of a tide runs thru the cut between Brier and the next island .

That 'next island' is Long Island. There is also a monument on Brier Island to Slocum. The tidal range there is world famous....as is the current that comes with it !! The pics of Slocum always reminded me of the 'Tristan Jones' kinda look.

Tristan was a friend of mine . We used to get together for a pint whenever .
Got completely tanked once in Annapolis at the Boat show!

Oh BTW, one of my best buddies lives across from Brier Island in Metagan River NS , he was the 1st mate on Bluenose II for nearly 20 years .
