The latest edition of Good Old Boat has some interesting articles.

On p. 52, the author is replacing old frames with surface-mounted plastic on his 1976 Tartan. Sounds familiar.

On p. 30, there is a good article on the Alberg 30 and some comparisons to similar yachts (CD 30, Pearson Coaster & Sea Sprite). Ariel & Commander skipper will relate to this one.

Jim DeWitt (local SF Bay painter) displays some of his great sailing scenes. Would that I could afford to have him do one of Maika'i.

I've been subscribing for years. But lately I've been wondering if the $40/yr for 6 issues, that's over $6.50 an issue isn't a bit steep. Or maybe I'm just cranky reading Frank's post on the other thread... :(

I agree it is a bit expensive. However, it's worth twice what any of the other boat mags cost. It's cover-to-cover great articles. I wish it was 12 issues a year.

I agree. There are a couple of sailing rags I will open, but Good Old Boat is the only one I read cover to cover.

Ocean Navigator, and Good old boat make the list. Took 'Sail' for a while, have some issues that never got past the 'thumb through' stage.... whole issues with nothing that applied to the small guy. :(

Yup - ditto. GoB is a cover to cover rag. No more "Sail" for me either.

I subscribe to "Cruising World" too. I got a "free" bag out of it and a $45.00 three year subscription. (About 1/6th the cost of GoB.) CW occasionally has some pretty good articles, and nice pics too. :p

I agree that GOB is the best of the US magazines, though I do succumb to the occasional $5/yr Sail subscription. I'd like to put in a plug for two British sailing magazines I enjoy: Practical Boat Owner and Yachting Monthly. The Brits seem to have figured out how to produce magazines that have interesting articles for the majority of boaters, while still having reviews of and ads from the new boat manufacturers and equipment suppliers. No American publication successfully reaches the entire sailing population as well as they do.

When I bought my first boat 5 years ago I became a big fan of Practical Sailor. They have lost me recently. I think their editorial approach has lost touch with the "practical" side. It seems much more concerned with what is for sale in the marine market rather than the practical application of those products to the reality of sailing or maintaining a boat. "Retail Sailor" comes to mind when I see it now.
